On Writing
Paul Robert Herman (sometimes credited as Paul Giada) has been writing since childhood. In his early days, he created comic book characters
and entire worlds in which they existed. Although lacking illustration, endless notebooks
were devoted to the writing portion and character development.
Paul really began to take his writing seriously while in high school.
He wrote volumes of poetry and short stories. While in college,
he started to get some of his work published. However, he still couldn't
fathom a writing career. He graduated instead with a bachelor's degree in Psychology
from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, double minoring in English and Eastern Philosophy.
A
year later, he went back to school at the University of Colorado in
Boulder. He studied to become an English teacher, specializing in
creative writing and film. More poems and short stories were published.
Upon graduating from the University of Colorado, he could no longer
fend off his calling for a career in the entertainment industry.
Paul finally left for Hollywood. His goal was to become a dedicated screenwriter,
director, and producer. Not long after landing his first literary agent, Paul returned to school at UCLA. He graduated from UCLA's Professional Program
in Screenwriting. Since living in LA, Paul has written
ten feature-length screenplays and seven short films. Paul has brought several of those short films to fruition. His last, Tempus Fugit, screened at several film festivals.
Paul's first published book, Tales from the Script, hit the shelves in 2010. It was soon followed by his first distributed film, a companion documentary by the same name. In January of 2011, he was hired as the Executive Producer on the fascinating documentary, Unforgettable.
On the Martial Arts
During
middle school, Paul began studying the martial arts. He started
off in a Karate class and studied there throughout high school.
Once he received his black belt, Paul moved on to study Chinese
Kung Fu. He began in the Hung Gar style (Tiger/Crane) and moved
through a series of teachers in college until graduation. He studied
such varied styles as Eagle Claw, Black Dragon, Praying Mantis,
White Lotus, and Drunken Monkey.
But he didn't reach his true expertise until he returned to school in Colorado. During his five year stay, Paul studied with Shirfu Christophe,
a renown master of Tai Chi Chuan and Chang Chuan (Shaolin Longfist). He quickly excelled
and was awarded a black sash (belt) several years later.
He won many tournaments during his peak and went on to win the 1997
National Kung Fu Championships. His teacher was also a local movie
star, starring in many low-budget martial arts films. This furthered
Paul's knowledge and drive for the movies.
Since
being in LA, Paul has choreographed and acted in several low-budget
martial arts films. Armed with an expert sense of action
and a head full of Eastern culture, it seemed only natural that
The Jadecats would fight their way out of Paul's "temple of imagination" and
into the jadelight, er... limelight, that is.
